They sold everything they owned in Colorado. Last year they bought a 28-foot sailboat in Alabama and headed for Tarpon Springs. They lived at the marina for months, getting the Lagniappe ready for their journey. They said their goodbyes on Tuesday and set sail for Key West. The next day, the dream died in John’s Pass.

Florida's Pinellas County beaches offer stretch of sand for every mood

Madeira Beach considers parking rate increase
The city is looking at upping its hourly parking rate at city-owned lots, including John’s Pass Village. The increase would be 25 cents an hour, on Fridays and Saturdays only.

The Sea Dog Brew Pub opened in Treasure Island in October. It followed others opening along the beaches: Mastry’s in St. Pete Beach and Mad Beach Brewery in Madeira Beach. There could be another to follow in Indian Rocks Beach if the hopes of city officials are realized.

Ousted Madeira Beach manager among finalists to replace himself
Among the finalists is Shane Crawford, who originally created the opening last spring when he resigned to avoid being fired. He was replaced in October by Fire Chief Derryl O’Neal, who resigned less than two weeks later and went back to his post as fire chief.

Water samples taken from Boca Ciega Bay and other city waterways reveal the water quality is improving. That assessment was given by Joe Thames, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System coordinator for Pinellas County, at a special City Commission meeting on Dec. 19.

Emergency Access Permit for barrier island residents and businesses
In an effort to prevent looting and burglary after a large-scale mandatory evacuation, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and the barrier islands have joined forces to provide free Emergency Access Permits to all businesses and residents of the barrier islands. Once a mandatory evacuation order has been lifted, Emergency Access Permits will be required to re-enter an evacuated area. There are nine entry points to the barrier islands. Access will be limited based on the closest entry point to your residence.
